Sāmagāna

Working Paper Series

This series of IDEAS events is a showcase of work- in-progress from each IDEAS Constellation. Sāmagāna represents the philosophy and science of uniting our thought and learning, and denotes the beginning of purposeful creation. As researchers, we juxtapose this historic word as the vision of our Working Paper Discussion series. Herein, we invite the scholarly community to engage with the ongoing research of our Fellows and Associates to help them identify new perspectives and refine the scope of their ongoing research.

PAPER ABSTRACT

In this article, Kumar examines little-known disputes involving the abduction of women in the Punjab and Baluch borderlands. By focusing on these local conflicts, this presentation sheds light on the functioning of various practices of jurisprudence - Shariat, customs, and colonial law - that were competing with each other. This paper contributes more largely to the discussions on the questions of state-making and the nature of imperialism in these frontier regions.
